Perceptions of Beverage Fizziness and Coldness by Container Type - Nottingham Trent University

This research involved the blind tasting of beverages to assess a number of criteria relating to taste at various time intervals following the opening of the beverage. A number of brands of drink, packaged in a range of formats, were given to consumers to taste. The experiment used a mixed design, with beverage type being one of the independent variables (with 3 levels – that is, three different drinks), together with the container as the second independent variable (again three levels: glass, tin cans or a plastic container). The between subjects design reflected the use of different participants to sample each of the 6 conditions (3 drinks x 2 types of container). 

Upon entering the research room, each participant was asked to make themselves comfortable and then given a drink to sample. On the instructions of the Research Associate they opened the container, tried the drink and then rated it on a ten point scale for Fizziness and Coldness.

After 5 minutes the participant was request to taste and rate the drink again, so making ‘Time’ the within-subject variable. After 5 total taste tests (20 minutes) the participant filled in additional questions and was free to leave.

Results were analysed using advanced statistical procedures, such as Chi Square, Crosstabs and ANOVA (Analysis of Variance).

Many glass making terms have entered the language: 'Shut yer gob': a molten lump of glass is called a 'gob' to which the glass blower attached a tube to blow the glass into shape. The blower had to blow hard which made his cheeks very large. Today someone with a big mouth is told they have a big gob.
